Nationally, the Irish Sports Council, a statutory body under the Department of Arts, Sports and Tourism, is responsible for the planning and co-ordination of the development of competitive and recreational sport in Ireland.

The Leitrim VEC Youth and Sports sub-committee handles administration of small grants for clubs and organisations as well as other activities including:

§ “Sport for All” Leadership courses

§ Special project for disadvantaged youth

§ Outdoor pursuit course at Lough Allen Adventure Centre

In County Leitrim, the choice in sports facilities include:

Adventure Centres, Leisure Centres, Sports Centres and Sports Clubs. Types of sports include: Fishing, Walking, Cycling, Boat Trips/Hire, Canoeing, Golfing, Camping, Swimming, Horse Riding, Rugby, Soccer and Gaelic Football.

Gaelic Football (GAA). What makes Leitrim unique in Gaelic Football circles is not the County's achievements on the field but the high level of participation in the sport. Leitrim, the county with the smallest population of any of Ireland's 32 Counties, has the highest number of G.A.A. clubs and players per capita, of any County in Ireland. Leitrim has 24 G.A.A. Clubs for a population of just over 25,000 and 54 adult teams playing in 5 League divisions.

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) is the governing body of football (soccer) in the Republic of Ireland. The FAI controls the activities of all Ireland's international football teams and is affiliated to Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

Walking: There are various linear walkways designated in Leitrim. Among them are the Leitrim Way, Slieve-an-Iarainn Way, Miner’s Way and Barr Scenic Walk. In addition, looped walkways are being developed in Ballinaglera, close to Lough Allen. One of these links with the Slieve-an-Iarainn Way.

Fishing: Leitrim is famous for its course and fly-fishing waters. Carrick on Shannon is a major angling centre which is very well serviced with quality and specialist accommodation and tackle stores.
