The National Roads Authority was formally established as an independent statutory body under the Road Act, 1993, with effect from 1 January 1994. The Authority's primary function, under the Roads Act 1993, is 'to secure the provision of a safe and efficient network of national roads'. For this purpose, it has overall responsibility for planning and supervision of construction and maintenance works on these roads.

Roads Servicewas established on 1 April 1996 as an Executive Agency within the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland, now moved to the Department for Regional Development. Its objectives include:

§ Maintenance of the road infrastructure to keep it safe, effective and reliable and to preserve the value of the asset.

§ Management and improvement of the road network to promote safety and efficient operation.

Ten Ulsterbus express buses daily (five services on Sunday) to Enniskillen provide quick access from Belfast and the eastern seaboard. Express buses run from Dublin four times daily (three services on Sunday); a good local bus links from Enniskillen to country areas.

The Community Transport Association represents a wide variety of operators who provide accessible door-to-door and group travel services to community groups, older people and people with disabilities on a non-profit making basis throughout Northern Ireland. A community transport operator can be located in most parts of the country, in both urban and rural areas. There are two Community Transport operators in Fermanagh –

  • Fermanagh & South Tyrone Rural Transport and

  • Rural Lift for South West Fermanagh
