The Health Service Executive (HSE) assumed responsibility for the health service in the Republic of Ireland on January 1, 2005. As part of the Irish government's Health Service Reform Programme, the functions of Health Boards, including the Northwestern Health Board, have transferred to the HSE. The former North Western Health Board is now under the auspices of the Health Service Executive and is known as HSE -North Western Area.

A wide range of community based professional health services are provided in the North West area, among which are:

§ Community Care Programme, including Addiction Counselling for Young People

§ Environmental Health Services (Two broad divisions – Food Controland Environmental Control)

§ Public Health – including Cardiovascular, Mental Health , Acute Services , Primary Care, Child and Family

§ Health Promotion, with activities in the areas of Nutrition, Physical Activity, Smoking, Mental Health, Drugs, Alcohol

§ Hospitals. The local hospital for Sligo/Leitrim is Sligo General Hospital.
