Music session on the Shannon
The vision of Leitrim County Development Board in their strategy document is “That Leitrim’s culture and heritage will be protected, treasured and promoted for the benefit of all of its citizens, both current and future.” Its objectives are to:
§ Support and stimulate public participation in the arts.
§ Encourage the development of audiences for the arts.
§ Increase opportunities for children and young people to engage with the arts.
§ Support the development of the professional artist.
§ Provide supports to encourage greater artistic activity in Leitrim.
To this end, Leitrim County Council are actively supporting and promoting the arts in Leitrim. It currently employs an Arts Officer and an Information and Communications Officer for the Arts. There are three Arts Centre/Venues in County Leitrim comprising theatres with arts centres attached. These are The Dock, Carrick-on-Shannon, the Glens Centre in Manorhamilton and the Corn Mill Theatre in Carrigallen.
There is limited gallery/exhibition space in the County - Leitrim Design House and a small area at the back of a shop both of which are in Carrick on Shannon, and are used for the display and sale of paintings.
There is a wide variety of Arts groups operating within County Leitrim, ranging in activity from traditional music to dance and drama, while there are also a number of crafts and amateur arts organisations/groups.
