Department for Social Development
The Department for Social Development has strategic responsibility for urban regeneration, community and voluntary sector development, social legislation, housing, social security benefits, pensions and child support. The Voluntary and Community Unit provides a focus within Government on voluntary and community activity. It supports community development; promotes volunteering and active citizenship; works in partnership with the community and voluntary sector; and researches issues affecting the voluntary and community sector. A Local Community Fund of £3m per annum is used to empower people in disadvantaged communities, where community infrastructure is weak, to develop community capacity and leadership.
