Funding Role: The EU Programme INTERREG has the objective of strengthening economic and social cohesion in the Community by promoting cross-border, transnational and interregional co-operation and balanced development of the Community territory.
Policy:Border Action is involved in the implementation of Measures 3.1 and 4.1 of the INTERREG IIIA Programme.
Measure 3.1 – Civic and Community Networking. This measure aims to create a sustainable cross-border community infrastructure focused on social and economic development that reduces peripherality, deepens the concept of partnership, promotes community confidence and development and operates strategically at regional, sub-regional and grass roots level.
Measure 4.1 - Rural Development Initiative. The overall objective of the Measure is to diversify, develop and strengthen the rural economy in disadvantaged cross-border areas. Specifically the Measure will:
1. Establish projects that will provide impact on a cross border basis through the implementation of a strategically focused Area Based Framework of single themed Projects.
2. Encourage rural businesses and communities to engage in developing the economic and social sustainability of their area through increased participation in cross-border activities.
3. Promote the development and expansion of rural businesses and increase participation in cross border economic and social activity by excluded disadvantaged or minority communities.
4. Increase the contribution that natural resources, rural tourism and craft activities make to the rural economy of the areas on a cross border basis.

Cross-Border Relevance
All Interreg projects must be cross-border – have a cross-border consortium promoting the project and/or have actions that impact on both sides of the border.
